The F8621A is the communication workhorse of every large-scale HIQuad installation. While the central CPU (F8650X/F8652X) executes the safety application program, the F8621A independently handles all fieldbus and network traffic via its own PowerPC core and dedicated dual-port RAM interface to the safety backplane.

This architecture prevents communication bursts (e.g., 200+ PROFIBUS slaves polling at 12 Mbit/s) from stealing CPU cycles and degrading worst-case reaction time—critical for maintaining certified SIL 3 response in systems with >10,000 I/O points. All protocol stacks run in certified real-time code, and data exchange with the main CPU is fully synchronized and voted in TMR systems.

In practice, adding one F8621A per rack typically reduces CPU load from 85–95 % down to 30–50 %, providing the headroom needed for future expansions without hardware upgrades.
