  • Description

GE Multilin B30 is a low-impedance bus differential protection relay that integrates protection, control, metering, and automation for LV, MV, HV, and EHV busbar applications in substations and industrial power systems. Used in centralized or distributed protection schemes, it supports conventional CT/VT inputs or IEC 61850-9-2/-9-2LE process bus architecture.

Featuring fast differential tripping (<1 power cycle) and modular communication (Ethernet, serial, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus), B30 delivers scalable busbar protection up to 6–16 feeders with multiple protection zones. Cybersecurity features and programmable logic simplify integration into modern Grid and SCADA environments.

    Phase 1 — Pre-Installation (est. 10 min)
De-energize switchgear. Wait ~5 min for bus CTs/VTs to settle. Tools: insulated screwdriver, calibration CT/VT ratios, label tags, laptop with EnerVista UR Setup, torque driver. Backup previous protection settings and wiring photos.

    Phase 2 — Removal (est. 5 min)
Label bus interface CT/VT leads and communications cables. Isolate relay from bus connections. Remove mounting hardware; extract relay from panel. Inspect connector pins and bus CT/VT wiring for corrosion/contamination.

    Phase 3 — Installation (est. 10 min)
ESD strap recommended. Seat B30 into panel/backplane. Torque terminals per OEM sheet (~0.5 N·m typical). Reconnect CT/VT leads, Ethernet/serial links, and redundant communications modules. Ensure proper cable shielding and termination.

    Phase 4 — Power-On & Testing (est. 15 min)
Apply station voltage. Observe relay LG, RUN LEDs and integrated display. Using EnerVista UR Setup, verify CT polarities, ratio settings, and differential zones. Confirm IEC 61850 Logical Nodes and GOOSE configuration if used. Run functional tests: apply test currents, validate trip outputs, alarm points, and communications polling. Log results; confirm >30 min stability.

    Troubleshooting quick-reference
    • No differential pickup → check CT ratio/polarity and restraining settings
    • Erratic comms → verify network settings, VLAN, and protocols
    • False trips → inspect CT saturation and bus wiring noise
