    The HCU3700/3703E occupies the communication layer within the Tricon safety system hierarchy, sitting in the main chassis alongside the Main Processor (MP3008/MP3009) modules. Unlike standard PLC communication cards, it implements full triple-modular-redundant architecture: three identical, isolated processing legs continuously vote on all transmitted and received data frames, ensuring that a single fault cannot corrupt safety-critical messages. This TMR design delivers true fault tolerance rather than simple duplication.

    Each leg contains its own CPU, memory, and physical-layer transceivers. Leg synchronization occurs every scan via a dedicated high-speed inter-leg bus, achieving sub-millisecond discrepancy detection. In the event of a detected fault, the faulty leg is automatically isolated while the remaining two continue operation without disturbance to the process or external networks — a capability essential for emergency shutdown (ESD), fire & gas (F&G), and burner management systems (BMS) where communication loss equals loss of view.

    The module’s four independent Ethernet ports can be configured for network-isolated or fully redundant (A/B networks), supporting both star and ring topologies with media redundancy protocols. Serial ports maintain legacy connectivity to third-party devices while still benefiting from TMR voting, eliminating single points of failure that plague duplex systems.
