MTL Instruments MTL831B is an intrinsically safe analogue multiplexer transmitter that aggregates up to 16 thermocouple, mV, or RTD inputs in Zone 0 hazardous environments and conveys them to a safe-area receiver over redundant data highways. It’s often installed close to field sensors in ENC8/ENC83 enclosures.
Typical installations leverage dual redundant single-twisted-pair links that carry both power and signal back to the safe area, reducing cable runs and barrier costs. Response time is ~1 s per transmitter, and no separate hazardous area power supply is required.’
Installation & Configuration Guide
Phase 1 — Pre-Installation (est. 10 min)
De-energize field wiring; wait 5 min for discharge. Tools: insulated screwdrivers, torque driver, ESD strap, label tags, Fluke 115 multimeter. Photograph existing wiring and enclosure orientation. Confirm hazardous area class and enclosure type.
Phase 2 — Removal (est. 5 min)
Label all conductors before loosening to avoid mix-ups later. Release retaining clips; pull transmitter straight off DIN rail or enclosure adapter. Inspect backplane/data highway connectors for wear or corrosion.
Phase 3 — Installation (est. 10 min)
Wear ESD protection. Confirm MTL831B part number matches your order. Seat transmitter until clips engage. Tighten sensor terminations to ~0.5 N·m. Connect redundant data highways as per system design.
Phase 4 — Power-On & Testing (est. 15 min)
Verify loop supply to highway link. Observe module status LEDs; green indicates normal. Connect safe-area receiver (e.g., MTL838B/838C). Test each input type (thermocouple/RTD) for expected values. Confirm stability over >30 min. Log installation into maintenance records.
