Description
MTL Instruments MTL831B is an intrinsically safe analogue multiplexer transmitter used in hazardous areas to aggregate up to 16 temperature, mV, or resistance signals and relay them over redundant data highways to safe-area receivers. Installed close to field sensors, it reduces cabling complexity back to control or safety systems.
Capable of loop power from the data highway, MTL831B eliminates the need for separate hazardous-area power supplies. Typical response time per transmitter channel is ~1 s (system dependent), and integrating this reduces field terminations and cut cable costs on complex sensor arrays.
Phase 1 — Pre-Installation (est. 10 min)
De-energize field cabling; wait 5 min for discharge. Gather insulated screwdrivers, torque driver, ESD wrist strap, Fluke 115 multimeter, and label tags. Photograph existing wiring and enclosure orientation. Confirm hazardous area zone classification and barrier configs.
Phase 2 — Removal (est. 5 min)
Label every conductor before loosening screws. Release DIN rail or enclosure clips; pull module straight out to avoid backplane stress. Inspect connector pins and terminal blocks for bends or corrosion.
Phase 3 — Installation (est. 10 min)
ESD protection on. Confirm correct MTL831B part number. Seat module until clips fully engage. Tighten sensor terminations to ~0.5 N·m. Connect dual redundant data highways per system design.
Phase 4 — Power-On & Testing (est. 15 min)
Verify loop supply via the highway link. Observe LEDs for power and status. Connect safe-area receiver (e.g., MTL838B/C). Test representative channels: check expected voltages/temperatures and stable data reception. Log in maintenance records after ≥30 min of stable operation.
