Description
ProSoft MVI94-MCM-MHI is a Modbus master/slave communication module designed for Allen-Bradley 1794 FLEX I/O systems, enabling serial data exchange between PLC backplanes and Modbus-compatible field devices such as meters, drives, and remote I/O. It installs as a single-slot module and operates via ladder logic mapping.
Configured with dual serial ports and support for up to 5,000 registers, it handles both polling and slave responses in the same module. In real projects, this reduces the need for external gateways and keeps protocol handling inside the rack — less wiring, fewer failure points (though configuration still takes care).
Installation & Configuration Guide
Phase 1 — Pre-Installation (est. 10 min)
De-energize rack. Wait 5 minutes. Tools: laptop (RSLogix + ProSoft Config Builder), serial cable, labels, multimeter. Back up PLC logic and Modbus mapping. Photograph wiring and terminal base.
Phase 2 — Removal (est. 5 min)
Label all serial lines (TX/RX or A/B). Remove module from FLEX terminal base. Inspect backplane connector — small damage here causes intermittent faults later.
Phase 3 — Installation (est. 10 min)
ESD first. Confirm module and terminal base compatibility. Insert module into 1794 base. Wire serial ports (set RS-232 or RS-485 via jumper). Configure baud rate, parity, node addressing, and command list in ProSoft Config Builder.
Phase 4 — Power-On & Testing (est. 15 min)
Apply power (12–24 V DC external + backplane). Check LED indicators. Validate Modbus communication using test device. Execute read/write commands (FC03, FC06, FC16). Run stable polling for >30 min and confirm no CRC or timeout errors.
Troubleshooting quick-reference:
• No comms → check baud rate, parity, wiring polarity
• CRC errors → inspect shielding and noise sources
• No data in PLC → verify register mapping and command list
