A single network failure can isolate controllers from operator stations or safety systems. The ABB NE870 (article number 3BSE080239R1) is an industrial router that also functions as a firewall for System 800xA. It segments client/server networks from control networks, separates control and safety networks, and creates RNRP tunnel areas between redundant networks.
Supporting ABB’s Redundant Network Routing Protocol (RNRP), the NE870 enables two physically separate networks and eliminates single points of failure. It offers three 10/100/1000 Mb/s and eight 10/100 Mb/s RJ45 ports, redundant 16–60 VDC power inputs with alarm, digital I/O for monitoring, USB console and configuration ports, and DIN-rail mounting. Installation & Configuration Guide
Phase 1 — Pre-Installation (est. 10–15 min)
De-energize the cabinet and follow lock-out/tag-out. Tools: ESD wrist strap, screwdriver, multimeter, laptop with CLI or configuration software. Record existing IP addresses, RNRP settings and firewall rules. Photograph all Ethernet ports, power terminals and digital I/O wiring.
Phase 2 — Removal (est. 5–10 min)
Label every cable. Disconnect redundant 16–60 VDC power feeds, Ethernet links and digital I/O. Release the DIN-rail clip and remove the unit. Cap open connectors and inspect the rail area.
Phase 3 — Installation (est. 10 min)
Confirm the article number is 3BSE080239R1. Snap the NE870 onto the DIN rail, reconnect power (observe polarity on both inputs), Ethernet cables and digital I/O exactly as photographed.
Phase 4 — Power-On & Testing (est. 15–25 min)
Apply power. Verify status LEDs and both power inputs. Connect via console or network, load or verify configuration (USB port supports save/load), confirm RNRP adjacency and firewall rules, and test traffic between zones. Run stable and log the change.
