Description
Product Introduction
From a protection-engineering standpoint, the ABB REF615C-E HCFKAEADABC2DAAIIE sits squarely in the medium-voltage feeder protection category for substations, industrial switchgear, and utility distribution panels. This relay combines protection, measurement, monitoring, and communication functions inside a compact IEC 61850-ready platform.
Compared with older REF54x or SPACOM platforms, this unit processes directional overcurrent and earth-fault logic much faster while supporting GOOSE messaging and PRP/HSR redundancy. In field deployments of AC800M and MicroSCADA systems, engineers usually choose this relay when migration to digital substations is required without replacing the entire switchgear lineup. Trip response can reach <20 ms depending on the protection stage configuration.
Installation & Configuration Guide
Phase 1 — Pre-Installation
- De-energize cabinet and wait 5 min for DC bus discharge
- Prepare tools: Fluke 115 multimeter, insulated screwdriver set, ESD strap, torque driver
- Export relay settings from PCM600
- Photograph DIP switches, jumper positions, CT/PT wiring, and rack layout
Bottom line — photo everything first.
Phase 2 — Removal
- Label every terminal before disconnecting
- Remove retaining clips carefully
- Pull relay perpendicular to the chassis guide rails
- Inspect connector pins for oxidation, bent contacts, or overheating marks
One bent pin can waste half a day.
Phase 3 — Installation
- Connect ESD strap before touching the PCB edge
- Verify REF615C-E order code matches the original unit
- Replicate DIP/jumper settings exactly from removal photos
- Seat relay firmly until latch locks
- Reconnect wiring at approximately 0.5 N·m torque
- Confirm CT polarity before energizing

Phase 4 — Power-On & Testing
- Verify 24 V DC ±10% auxiliary supply
- Observe LEDs: green = RUN, red = ERR, amber = DIAG
- Connect PCM600 engineering software
- Download or verify parameter file
- Test one complete protection loop including trip output and breaker feedback
- Run communication handshake through IEC 61850 or Modbus
- Monitor operation for >30 min before returning feeder to service
- Log firmware version and maintenance action in site records
